How the 2027 Social Security COLA May Affect You
Beginning in January 2027, Social Security beneficiaries will receive a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), following the Social Security Administration’s October 14, 2026, announcement. It is the largest Social Security benefit increase since 2023.
The change will affect an estimated 76 million people who receive Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). At Gate City Insurance, we believe it is important to understand not only the increase itself, but also how Medicare costs may influence the amount that reaches your monthly budget.
Because Medicare premiums may be deducted directly from Social Security payments, reviewing these changes can help you plan ahead for healthcare costs and other 2027 expenses.
What Will the 3.6% Increase Mean for Beneficiaries?
Social Security monthly benefits will rise by 3.6% in January 2027. This is higher than the 2.8% adjustment provided for 2026.
The SSA estimates that the average retired worker’s monthly benefit will increase by about $75, rising from $2,095 to $2,170. Over a full year, that amounts to approximately $900 in additional benefits.
SSI recipients will also receive the 3.6% adjustment, with updated payments scheduled to begin on December 31, 2026. The purpose of the COLA is to help benefits retain purchasing power as the cost of everyday needs continues to increase.
The exact increase will not be the same for every recipient. Your individual dollar amount will depend on the benefit you currently receive.
How Does the SSA Calculate the COLA?
The Social Security Administration bases its annual COLA on inflation. It considers changes in the price of common goods and services, including food, transportation, and housing.
To make this calculation, the SSA uses the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, commonly called the CPI-W. It compares price data from July through September with the same three-month period in the prior year.
That formula produced a 3.6% adjustment for 2027. Although the increase is intended to help Social Security benefits keep pace with inflation, it may not fully offset higher costs for healthcare and other necessities.
What Other Social Security Updates Are Planned for 2027?
In addition to the benefit increase, the SSA announced several changes that may matter to people who are working, nearing retirement, or collecting benefits while earning income.
For 2027, the maximum annual earnings subject to Social Security taxes will increase from $184,500 to $192,300.
The earnings limit applies only to individuals receiving Social Security retirement or survivor benefits. If you will remain below full retirement age throughout 2027, the limit is $25,560. If you reach full retirement age during 2027, the limit is $67,920 for earnings received before the month you reach that age.
There is no earnings limit after you reach full retirement age.
How Can Medicare Affect Your Social Security Increase?
A higher Social Security benefit does not always mean that the full increase will appear in your monthly deposit. Medicare premiums can affect the net amount you receive.
For many beneficiaries, Medicare Part B premiums are automatically withheld from Social Security payments. If Part B premiums rise in 2027, they may absorb part of the 3.6% COLA.
For that reason, it is helpful to compare your updated Social Security benefit amount with your Medicare expenses. Gate City Insurance encourages beneficiaries to look at the full picture when estimating how much additional monthly income they may have available.
What Should You Review for 2027?
As the new benefit amounts take effect, consider reviewing a few key details that can affect your financial and healthcare planning:
- Check your revised benefit amount. Once the information becomes available, you can view your personalized COLA notice and benefit details through your Social Security online account.
- Reassess your retirement budget. Consider the effect of the increased benefit alongside possible changes in Medicare premiums, taxes, and regular living costs.
Knowing how your Social Security adjustment and Medicare costs work together can give you a clearer view of your monthly finances. Gate City Insurance recognizes that healthcare expenses are an important part of that planning, and reviewing your coverage costs can help you prepare for 2027 with greater confidence.
